If you've visited www.norc.ro recently, you've probably noticed that we have a new section which gives you lots of valuable information about the urban jungle. In the review section (available only for Romanian site at the moment) you can find restaurants, cinemas, art galleries and all sorts of other places from Bucharest, Constanta, Iasi and Cluj. Bucharest is the „most populated" city in NORC, having over 1000 locations mapped. You can look on our site for a bank, a shop, a vet, a beauty parlor and many other useful places - you name them. Bigger, better, faster, more

Posted by Rucsandra on October 8, 2009 5:49 PM |No Comments |No TrackBacks

Recently, we've made a few adjustments to our site. We've re-written the algorithm for positioning on the map. Now, you can use the maps from over 600 cities in Romania, not only those which we had already covered and transformed into panoramas. Moreover, we have improved the street level positioning. Now on each panorama we have the approximate address of the place where it has been taken (country, city and most of the times also the street). You might find this feature interesting especially if you want to send a panorama to a friend or use it as an (...) Continue reading

Office on wheels

Posted by Rucsandra on October 8, 2009 5:47 PM |No Comments |No TrackBacks

The NORC vans are equipped with everything you can find in a regular office - computer, keyboard, monitor and even a mouse. Two things are missing indeed - the fax machine and the printer. Instead we have the cameras on top of the car that need our special attention. As the Norcmobiles are genuine offices on wheels that transform spectacular or mundane sites and sceneries into panoramas, the cameras are the stars. The resolution has to be checked regularly as the light changes and all the cameras have to shot in the same time. When the system desynchronizes, the (...) Continue reading

What's Cookin' Doc?

Posted by Rucsandra on October 1, 2009 9:48 AM |No Comments |No TrackBacks

Maybe you've seen the NORC car passing through your town, a Dacia Logan van, with more cameras on top. I'm not sure though you were lucky enough to see the first NORC car which had a cooking pot on it. Because there was such a thing, at the time when our cars were still in beta. We've started to equip the first car in February 2008. One of the problems was that we had to figure out was how to attach the cameras so that they stay fixed on their stand. A colleague had the crazy idea to use (...) Continue reading

Panoramas from the Austrian Alps

Posted by Rucsandra on September 28, 2009 2:13 PM

As winter holiday is on its way, we thought you'll be in the mood for skiing and hiking. The NORC team took a trip in the Austrian lands of Tirol, Vorarlberg and Salzburg. For more than four weeks we drove our norcmobiles through the Austrian Alps and we managed to turn 2600 kilometers into the most beautiful panoramas. Honestly, we really liked what we discovered there. The panoramas are already online. You can take a virtual trip to Innsbruck, Axams, Ischgl. Zell am See, Kitzbuhel or Krumbach anytime now. If you enjoyed the resorts, all you have to do is (...) Continue reading

Geolocalisation using Open Street Map

Maybe you are wondering how come we can pinpoint a location on the map. Or maybe you are wondering which kind of map we are using, or if it is correct. Our work is updating continuously and the same goes with the data we work on. We have chosen to work on the information given by Open Street Map which is kind of a Wikipedia of the maps. That is Open Street Map is user generated. Open Street Map allows you to view, edit and use geographical data in a collaborative way from anywhere on Earth. Sometimes the information (...) NORC opens hailing frequencies

Posted by Rucsandra on August 28, 2009 4:39 PM |No Comments |No TrackBacks

We are a bunch of guys who had a dream: to put this side of the world on the map through panoramic images. We did that all by ourselves, with the technology we developed and we didn't think for one second that this was impossible. The most difficult thing was building the first car. We had to think about how to position the cameras, which angles they should capture, for how long, how they should synchronize with the computers inside. But this is why we were quite busy since January 2008 and it is only now that we want to (...) Continue reading
