Jeremy Clarkson, one of the presenters of the famous Top Gear show called the Transfagarasan "the best road in the world" According to Jeremy, the Transfagarasan Road is so spectacular, that it surpasses even the Stelvio Pass, in Italy.

You can start the street-view tour of the Transfagarasan Road with this street panorama:

In the review section (available only for Romanian site at the moment) you can find restaurants, cinemas, art galleries and all sorts of other places from Bucharest, Constanta, Iasi and Cluj. Bucharest is the „most populated" city in NORC, having over 1000 locations mapped. You can look on our site for a bank, a shop, a vet, a beauty parlor and many other useful places - you name them. What's more, you can add locations yourself and you can write reviews of the places you've been to and made an impression on you. Of course, you can share this information with your friends or with other members of the NORC community.

Recently, we've made a few adjustments to our site. We've re-written the algorithm for positioning on the map. Now, you can use the maps from over 600 cities in Romania, not only those which we had already covered and transformed into panoramas. Moreover, we have improved the street level positioning. Now on each panorama we have the approximate address of the place where it has been taken (country, city and most of the times also the street). You might find this feature interesting especially if you want to send a panorama to a friend or use it as an embed in another site.

The cities that have been turned into panoramas are still available as links on the site, down under the map.

And that's not all we've done to make the site more user friendly. In addition to all these, we've created a "report this panorama" click button on each panorama. In case we have forgotten to blur a face or the content of the panorama is inappropriate in any way, just click that button, and we'll try to fix the issue as fast as we can.

Come visit the upgraded NORC and let us know if you find these changes useful.

The NORC vans are equipped with everything you can find in a regular office - computer, keyboard, monitor and even a mouse. Two things are missing indeed - the fax machine and the printer. Instead we have the cameras on top of the car that need our special attention.

As the Norcmobiles are genuine offices on wheels that transform spectacular or mundane sites and sceneries into panoramas, the cameras are the stars. The resolution has to be checked regularly as the light changes and all the cameras have to shot in the same time. When the system desynchronizes, the driver is automatically noticed. Then, he has to pull over, fix the problem and go back to the point where the problem occurred.

Maybe you've seen the NORC car passing through your town, a Dacia Logan van, with more cameras on top. I'm not sure though you were lucky enough to see the first NORC car which had a cooking pot on it. Because there was such a thing, at the time when our cars were still in beta.

We've started to equip the first car in February 2008. One of the problems was that we had to figure out was how to attach the cameras so that they stay fixed on their stand. A colleague had the crazy idea to use a pot to support the cameras. We went to the store and got a pretty expensive one. It had to hold approximately 20 kilograms of equipment.

The car went out on the streets of Bucharest, and then returned to the "laboratory" where we replaced the cooking pot with an aluminium stand, lighter but strong enough to sustain the cameras keeping the right angle and the right height.

The software that makes the cameras to be triggered at the same time so the pictures make up a panorama was also designed by the NORC team. The cars came out of beta in March last year. We started photographing Bucharest and then we went on to Central Europe.

Now, technology has greatly evolved and that made our job much easier.

For more than four weeks we drove our norcmobiles through the Austrian Alps and we managed to turn 2600 kilometers into the most beautiful panoramas.

Honestly, we really liked what we discovered there. The panoramas are already online. You can take a virtual trip to Innsbruck, Axams, Ischgl. Zell am See, Kitzbuhel or Krumbach anytime now. If you enjoyed the resorts, all you have to do is to wait for the snow to come. Then, you can take your skies or your snowboard and off you go!

Maybe you are wondering how come we can pinpoint a location on the map. Or maybe you are wondering which kind of map we are using, or if it is correct.

Our work is updating continuously and the same goes with the data we work on. We have chosen to work on the information given by Open Street Map which is kind of a Wikipedia of the maps. That is Open Street Map is user generated. Open Street Map allows you to view, edit and use geographical data in a collaborative way from anywhere on Earth.

Sometimes the information we find there is not accurate, so in the trails we make with our cars, we "up-date the map" and share this information with Open Street Map so it can become better as well. The pictures we take are linked with a geo-positioning system (GPS) and a correction system (DGPS), so we always know where a picture has been taken.

We believe that in present times the internet needs generosity and sharing so it can become better and more useful to everybody.

We are a bunch of guys who had a dream: to put this side of the world on the map through panoramic images. We did that all by ourselves, with the technology we developed and we didn't think for one second that this was impossible.

The most difficult thing was building the first car. We had to think about how to position the cameras, which angles they should capture, for how long, how they should synchronize with the computers inside.

But this is why we were quite busy since January 2008 and it is only now that we want to concentrate on the community and open the hailing frequencies. The community was very important to us from the beginning, as the news of our existence spread rapidly across the web and people embraced our idea.

So the NORC blog will be the place where you'll find out about all the new stuff that we are doing and lots of stories about how we do it, because life at NORC is full of adventure.

These panoramic images enable virtual tours in the cities covered by NORC and are realized using a proprietary technology. The positioning of the panoramas on the map is set using a GPS system that acquires the real time coordinates of each point where an image has been captured. A correction system (DGPS) is used in order to control the correct positioning of the panoramas. Each panoramic image is obtained by assembling 10 photos simultaneously shot in each panorama.
