Maybe you've seen the NORC car passing through your town, a Dacia Logan van, with more cameras on top. I'm not sure though you were lucky enough to see the first NORC car which had a cooking pot on it. Because there was such a thing, at the time when our cars were still in beta.
We've started to equip the first car in February 2008. One of the problems was that we had to figure out was how to attach the cameras so that they stay fixed on their stand. A colleague had the crazy idea to use a pot to support the cameras. We went to the store and got a pretty expensive one. It had to hold approximately 20 kilograms of equipment.
The car went out on the streets of Bucharest, and then returned to the "laboratory" where we replaced the cooking pot with an aluminium stand, lighter but strong enough to sustain the cameras keeping the right angle and the right height.
The software that makes the cameras to be triggered at the same time so the pictures make up a panorama was also designed by the NORC team. The cars came out of beta in March last year. We started photographing Bucharest and then we went on to Central Europe.
Now, technology has greatly evolved and that made our job much easier.
